360 Animals are Killed Yearly in Mikumi National Park
Nearly 360 animals are killed by rough drivers passing through Mikumi National Park. The Morogoro to Irings road which passes through the park for about 50 kilometres has cause a lot of problems for the animals including noise pollution and others.
Mr Kassim who was commenting on the welfare of animals in the park said one animal is knocked down by a car everyday so 360 animals die yearly. The park management has request the government to change the road direction and pass it through outside the national park but nothing has been done so far.
“It is now ten years since the plan was initiated,” he lamented, pointing other challenges posed by the vehicles as disturbances due to noise and pollution.
Other challenges addressed by the park management were noise pollution and littering. Majority of passengers who pass through the pack litter the area with plastic bags and containers. The park collects tones of plastic near the road every month.
Speaking to journalists the director of Serengeti National Park, Mr Meyas Mollel asked for the journalists to be educated on the advantages of preserving nature so that they may educate the public through their work. Mr Mollel said educating journalists will be educating the whole public and that will help to reduce the challenges the park encounter.
