Police in Dar Es Salaam banned opposition ACT Wazalendo from holding their meeting to discuss and review the 2016/2017 Budget. The incident happened this Sunday and the party said Police's decision is a proof of the government's crackdown on the opposition.
ACT Wazalendo chairperson Ms Anna Mghwira told reporters that the the move was unacceptable as it was aimed at undermining democracy and its tenets. It's not yet clear whether the incident related to the police ban on political rallies last week or not.
However police on Sunday as well, briefly held Chadema Chairman Freeman Mbowe and several other party officials for questioning in Mwanza. Chadema communication officer Tumaini Makend confirmed that the officials were held at Nyakato police station.
On the other hand the police boss Ahmed Msangi also clarified Tumaini's statement but he added that the party officials have been released by the police without any charges.
"We have released them without charge after advising them to obey the directive on political rallies" he said.
Chadema filled a case on Friday, at the High Court challenging the ban on political rallies. Ms Mghwira also told reporters that while they were aware police had banned public rallies, it had come as a Suprise to them that political parties were also not allowed to hold closed door meetings.
