"We Have Blocked 603,000 IMEI" -Says TCRA

Tanzania Communication Regulatory Authority decided to switch off all fake IMEI for cell phones, IPad and Modem. TCRA executed its decision on 17 June 2016 at 12.00am, communication manager Innocent Mungy gave an official statement regarding the issue.

According to him 603,000 IMEIs have been blocked in the midnight around 12.00am, it's hard to the exact number of cell phones, iPad, Internet modem blocked because some can have two up to four IMEIs.

"Speaking about switching off network for fake cell phones, what we do is switch off network for all fake IMEI whereby yesterday we were able to block 603,000 IMEIs. Mind you one cell phone might have two IMEIs especially cell phones that use double SIM cards, but there are other fake cell phones with up to four different IMEIs." He said

"Therefore what we have done yesternight is block six hundred thousand and three thousand IMEIs which are used in fake cell phone, iPad and Internet modem. We can't know for sure the exact number of the cell phones we have blocked, but what we know is that we blocked six hundred thousand IMEIs which were in the cell phones." He added

He went further to explain the meaning of IMEIs and also to alert business people that blocking fake cell phones from accessing network is a continuous exercise, from now all fake cell phones brought in the country will be blocked on the spot.

"This is a progressive exercise from now our systems will make sure that all fake cell phones brought in the country are blocked from accessing any network. IMEI is an identity number, if you remember we said all phones are made with its own identity number. Any phone must pass through a process to ensure that it doesn't have things which aren't needed."
