HELSB Allocates 445bn Loans to Needy Students

HELSB has allocate 445bn to the needy students in high Insitutions, for academic year 2015/2016.
Speaking to the 'Daily News', the HESLB Director of Information, Education and Communication, Mr Cosmas Mwaisoba, said the 124,905 students includes first time applicants and continuing students.

Out of the 124,905 students, 52, 594 are new students joining higher learning institutions for the first time, while 72,311 are those continuing with their studies. "The number of continuing students might increase since there were some students who were seating for their supplementary exams, we are waiting for their clearance before allocating them with education loans," Mwaisoba said.
He, however, could not immediately say how many students missed out on the education loans. Mr Mwaisoba said the HESLB has already released funds for accommodation, books and stationeries and is waiting for invoices from respective universities and colleges to facilitate release of tuition fees.
The HESLB noted that the objective of the board is to ensure first time applicants with all required qualifications, in the 2015/16 academic year, secured education loans.
The board also urged all students to be patient and disregard reports circulating on social media that the board will not issue education loans to students in the academic year 2015/16.
HESLB was established by Act Number 9 of 2004 to assist, on loan basis, needy students who secure admission in accredited higher learning institutions, but have no economic power to pay for the costs of their education.
The board is also entrusted with the task of collecting due loans from previous loans’ beneficiaries to maintain a sustainable revolving fund.
