The opposition Civic United Front (CUF) yesterday called for Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa's intervention to resolve the Tanga Urban mayoral dispute. CUF is accusing the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) of overturning the mayoral election held on December 19,2015.
CCM candidate Mohamed Musa was declared the winner in an election that was marred in chaos. The announcement was furiously disputed by CUF councillors who maintain that their candidate, Mr Rashid Jumbe, won the elections after getting 20 votes, against 17 gathered by the CCM candidate.
Chaos erupted and the city director grabbed ballot boxes and fled with them to his office. Thereafter the city's administrative affairs have stalled CUF refused to work with the mayor whose status they dispute.yesterday the CUF deputy Secretary General (Mainland), Ms Magdalena Sakaya, told a press conference at the party's headquarters in Dar Es Salaam that the dispute has paralyzed the council and that implementation of development projects had stalled.
The outspoken politician who doubles as the Sikong MP, said they had decided to seek intervention of top government leaders after efforts to resolve the dispute at grassroots level had proved futile.
The former regional Commisioner, Ms Mantumu Mahiza, and the minister of state in the president's office responsible for Local Government and Regional Administration, Mr George Simbachawene, strived to resolve the standoff to no avail.
"more than five months have elapsed and development activities have stalled, wananchi are deprived of their constitutional rights" she said.
The Tanga urban MP, Mr Musa Mbarouk, advices CCM leaders in Tanga to heed President advice to resolve the dispute, by conceding defeat.
"CCM should heed President Magufuli's advice to respect democracy by recognising winners and for losers to accept defeat." He said.
