Muhimbili hospital is Tanzania national hospital located in Dar Es Salaam city, it is the hospital which treats almost all diseases and it attends to referral patients from other hospitals in Dar Es Salaam and up country. The hospital is also equipped with all necessary medical equipment and it has almost enough human resource to attend to patients.
There has been complains from patients in maternity ward (300-350 patients) that nurses who attend in that Ward are rude and insensitive. Mwananchi newspaper sent a journalist to investigate these rumors, the journalist stated in the hospital for two weeks and discovered some things.
According to Mwananchi newspaper these are the things their journalist (name withheld) discovered at Muhimbili hospital inside maternity ward.
Suture of abnominal operation explodes; one of the patient in maternity ward had given birth via C-Section, unfortunately her abdomen suture exploded and she started loosing blood. The patient tried to call nurses for help for over five hours without success. There was a time other women in the ward helped her to call the nurse but the nurse didn't pay any attention to them.
Majority of nurses in maternity ward sleep throughout the night, some sleep on the table, some on the bench and others put Matt on the floor, therefore patients who need help through the night can't get any at all.
On that fateful day journalist witnessed the woman whom her suture of abnominal operation had explode asking for help throughout the night. She lost a lot of blood untill her infant was also covered with blood from the mothers wound. At around 5AM one nurse woke up and found this woman loosing her breath, that's when she called other nurses, one took the infant to the infirmary, then the women was given oxygen and returned to thearter.
Moreover maternity patients are forced to walk to get a painkiller, some of them are still in critical condition due to the C-Section but nurses don't care about it, they sit on the chair and ask patients to walk from their beds to the table to get painkiller. Mwananchi journalist witnessed one woman who failed to walk completely, crawling from her bed to the table to get painkiller. This woman was still in so much pain to the extent that on her way back she could neither walk nor crawl, therefore she started pleading for help from the nurse.
"Don't disturb me, this is not TMJ or Regency hospital (Private hospitals in Dar Es Salaam) I don't have time, I have a lot of patients to give drugs, if you can't come here then continue to sit there." One nurse was replied.
This woman seemed to have lost her energy completely, that's when other patients intervened and insisited the nurse to help her out. When the nurse went to check her she was shocked to realize that her C-Section wound was wide open that's when she called others and the patient was returned to the thearter.
However Muhimbili hospital Director of Comunication, Aminiel Aligaisha said patients have the right to report such nurses to the authority. He therefore urged all patients to report any sort of mistreatment they get from the nurses, since the nurses wear identity cards it's easy to read their names and report them.
"It's good to report her/him so that disciplinary measures will be taken against her, our nurses wear identity cars, read her/his name and report. We have a very good system of listening complains from the patients so let's cooperate to stop these kind of acts." Aminiel said.
