An official from MCC in Washington said on Friday that Tanzania needs to act to get MCC aid restored. MCC denied Tanzania nearly half a billion U.S. Dollar due to two concerns which make disqualify the country from the aid.
MCC spokeswoman Renne Kelly said; "the government of Tanzania needs to determine how it will rectify the specific issues of concern."
"It is up to MCC board to determine if any such actions taken by the government of Tanzania are sufficient to warrant re-in statement" Renee Kelly added.
MCC board announced on 28th March that the 473 million U.S. Dollar aid to the government of Tanzania has been suspended due to two concerns. First the March 20 election in Zanzibar was conducted unfairly. Secondly the authorisation of cybercrime act which suppress freedom of speech to the media as well as citizens.
However Rennee Kelly refused to clarify if these were the exactly two concerns MCC have relied their decision on, all that she said is MCC doesn't provide checklist.
MCC provided first instalment aid of $698 million to Tanzania which was financed projects in transportation, energy and water sectors.
Nevertheless Tanzania isn't the first African country to be disqualified for Millenium Challenges Corporations (MCC) aid; Kenya has consistently failed to meet MCC standards on combating corruption therefore it has never qualify for MCC aid.
