Mbowe in Hot Soup Over a Inflammatory Remarks

CHAMA Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) yesterday condemned recent statements by National CHADEMA Chairman Freeman Mbowe that his party will protest against ‘unsatisfactory’ election results.

It has further requested responsible authorities to take measures against all those who have been spreading information and photographs of people involved in the alleged vote rigging.

Speaking in Dar es Salaam yesterday, a member of the CCM presidential campaign team, Mr January Makamba, said the statements were intended to disturb the peace. According to Mr Makamba, the CHADEMA Chairman was quoted saying they will announce their own results, as they will not be ready to accept results that are contrary to the wishes of the people.
"We are still wondering why responsible authorities have delayed to take measures against him, as his statements meant to cause a breach of the peace," said Mr Makamba.
He added that CCM strongly condemned such statements in which ‘’one party is disagreeing with the results and decide to announce their own; this means there is no need to have the National Electoral Commission (NEC)".
Mr Makamba took note of the photographs and text that have been spread in the social media, showing people carrying ballot boxes and a vehicle that were allegedly caught carrying ballot papers in several regions.
He said it was crucial for NEC to take measures early to clarify the matter and avoid a breach of the peace. "NEC should explain on those issues as they tend to circulate in social media very fast, something which might lead to misunderstanding if they are left unexplained," he advised.
On their (CCM) evaluation on the general election, Mr Makamba said although there were some challenges, the exercise was to a greater extent successful. He further said all political parties should follow required procedures to file their complaints regarding election irregularities.
