Rukwa region police Commander  Jacob Mwaruanda said 45 ballot boxes and other materials were burnt. The incident happened last night at around 11pm when the voting material were transported to Milepa ward along Lake Rukwa valley.

"I am on my way to where it happened, but so far I can confirm that the ballot paper were burnt last night." He said briefly.

So far eight people have been arrested in connection with the incident. Moreover Sumbawanga district election officer Mr Adam Missana also said the incident happened at around 11pm.

"45 ballot boxes and ballot papers were destroyed, the police escorting the vehicle refused to continue with the journey at 6pm on the grounds that they will reach Milepa ward late at night. One of the officers Mr Charles Mwita asked the police to continue with the journey but they refused and so the vehicle was left unescorted."
