Some of Beggars in Dar Es Salam City are Drug Traffickers- Says Makonda

Dar Es Salaam City RC (Regional Commisioner) Paul Makonda said, according to his research some of the beggars in the city are used for drug trafficking. Speaking through one of the radio station in Dar Es Salaam Paul Makonda said majority of beggars come from upcountry regions therefore it's necessary to return them to their respective homes so as to reduce the number of beggars in the city.

"There are beggars who are using this opportunity to supply drugs, due to their appearances nobody can suspect them, but they are best agents used to supply drugs" said Paul Makonda.

The RC also asked Dar Es Salaam residents to cooperate with him so as they may succeed to send all beggars back to their native homes. "we Tanzanians have so much love, but we need to think wether all these beggars on the roads need to be helped or not" he added.

Moreover Makonda said keeping these beggars will result into increase of theft and robbery in the future, because there are some beggars who are children as they grow up at some point they will feel working doesn't produce enough money like begging, then they will opt to be robbers.

"It will reach time beggars will compare what they make when they beg and when they work and they will definitely see they don't get much money when they work then they will decide to be robbers." He said.

Makonda also said according to his research 80 percent of beggars come from the upcountry regions therefore tomorrow special operation of taking them back to their respective native homes shall begin. Moreover beggars who don't have any disabilities will be arrested for the offence of loitering.
