Separate Incidents Claim Two Lives in Mbeya Region


Two people died in separate incidents in Mbeya Region on Sunday. In the first incident,a man identified as Ezekiel Mwalwenga (34), was hacked to death with machetes in a political dispute on Sunday night at Kipapa Village in the region.


The Mbeya Regional Police Commander (RPC), Mr Ahmed Msangi, told the ‘Daily News’ by phone that the man died of machete wounds on his head and left hand. He said the incident was politically motivated between residents of Lusango and Lupoto villages during councillorship elections.
“Four people are being held by police in Mbeya in connection with the incident,” he said. He mentioned the suspects as Paul Mwandombwa (36), Ipyana Mwakimbula (18), Thomas Mwasalukumo (58) and Benjamin Mwambunga (17) who is a Form Three student at Lufilyo Secondary School.
According to Msangi, the suspects are believed to have attacked the deceased when he was with his colleagues travelling in separate vehicles from a friendly football match at Lupoto towards Lusongo Village.
He said the body of the deceased is preserved at Mbeya Referral Hospital pending burial and the suspects will be charged in court of law after investigations are completed. In a separate incident, a woman identified as Remmy Udodi alias Jilala (34), died after a tree fell on her due to heavy rains at Ilela Village in Chunya District on Monday.
The incident occurred in the evening when heavy rains with strong winds pounded the village resulting in the falling of the tree. The body of the deceased is preserved at Chunya District Hospital pending burial.
