A YOUTH, Israel William (20), yesterday became the latest victim of the Cyber Crime Act of 2015 when he was arraigned for publishing inaccurate information through social networks. He is accused of abusing staff members of the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) by saying that they have been sodomised.
The young man, who resides at Mabibo area in Dar es Salaam, denied the charges before Principal Resident Magistrate Renatus Lutatinisibya at the Kisutu Resident Magistrate's Court in the city.
He was remanded in custody pending fulfillment of bail conditions imposed on him. The magistrate granted him bail upon securing two reliable sureties who were to sign bonds of 9m/- each.
The prosecution, led by State Attorney Estazia Wilson, informed the court that investigations into the matter have not been completed. The Magistrate adjourned the case to October 26, for hearing.
It is alleged that the accused committed the offence between September 10 and October 5, this year in the city. According to the prosecution, William published on his Facebook account inaccurate information that TCRA staff members have been sodomised, while knowing that such information was incorrect and abusive.
The prosecution told the court further that within the same period, by means of application service, knowingly the accused initiated the transmission of such communication, which was obscene.
His arraignment comes hardly few days after a student, Benedict Angelo Ngonyani (24), was charged with publishing false material involving Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), General Davis Mwamunyange.
Ngonyani allegedly published the information on September 25, this year, within the city that General Mwamunyange has been poisoned, while knowing such information was false.
