Dr Magufuli made the assurance here while addressing a historic campaign rally that was filled to capacity at Furahisha grounds in Mwanza city, as he continues traversing the country seeking votes ahead of the general election on October 25, this year.
He vowed to revamp ailing industries and set up new factories in the lakeside city which was in the yesteryears known for well performing ginneries, tanneries, fish processing and textile industries. “I want Mwanza to be an exemplary city in the East Africa and Great Lakes regions.
The city is strategically located and this is an advantage of making it a trade hub,” he said in a speech that lasted for over two hours. The presidential aspirant said the government has put in place favourable infrastructure to support establishment of textiles, ginneries, tanneries in addition to meat, fish and milk processing plants.
“In the past, the fishing industry alone used to employ over 6 million people in the country but this has changed; should you elect me I will make sure that the situation is changed for good,” he told the mammoth crowd that turned up at the grounds. He vowed to reduce costs of doing business and registration of business to put in place friendly environment for the private sector.
Dr Magufuli went on to promise that if elected into office, his government will see to it that two vessels are purchased to transport passengers and goods on Lake Victoria between Mwanza-Kagera and Mara regions in the Lake Zone.
Improvement of the railway network and expansion of Mwanza Airport to suit international standards, according to Dr Magufuli, are issues which will be addressed should the people elect him for the top job.
He urged Tanzanians to preserve the prevailing peace to avoid plunging the country into turmoil as it has been the case in some neighbouring countries. The lakeside city was brought to a standstill for the better part of the afternoon following a large crowd of people who thronged the roads to receive the presidential candidate from Mwanza Airport to Furahisha grounds in the city centre.
A plane carrying Dr Magufuli landed at Mwanza Airport at 02:30pm and his motorcade made several stops at Pasiansi, Kona ya Bwiru and Ghana areas from the airport as party enthusiasts blocked the road requiring him to address them.
It took almost an hour and a half for his entourage to navigate through a crowd of people lined from the Mwanza Airport to Furahisha grounds, a distance covering hardly 10 kilometres. The convoy was escorted by motorcycles and people who walked on foot along the road in sign of support to the CCM candidate.
Speaking at the rally, the Chairman of CCM Parents’ Wing, Mr Abdallah Bulembo, said the party endorsed Dr Magufuli as a flag bearer based on merits such as a clean record, hardworking and honest public servant.
Mr Bulembo, who is also the campaign manager for Dr Magufuli, said the presidential candidate has so far made 310 campaign rallies in 248 constituencies across the country. On his campaign trail, the presidential hopeful has as well made over 1,000 stops to sensitise the public on CCM manifesto for 2015 and 2020, where he campaigned for the party’s parliamentary and councillor candidates.
